Tennis is a ball sport for two players (singles) or pairs (doubles), in which a ball of average 67 mm diameter (usually yellow with white line) must be played with a tennis racket over a net.
Tennis was already played by the elite in the late Middle Ages. In its contemporary form, it originated in France and has been played since 1873. The name is derived from the French word "tenez!" - in English, "suit up!"
In tennis, the ball must be hit over the net onto the opponent(s)' court. The goal is to make it impossible for the opponent(s) to hit the ball back the same way. The sport is played both recreationally and competitively. Tennis players are generally members of tennis associations. In Belgium there are sports federations such as Tennis Vlaanderen for Flanders and AFT for Wallonia.
