Promising start for our marathon runner Dieter Coussement from Ingelmunster who also set a new Belgian record! - Dieter ran an extremely steady marathon in Tokyo. In impressive circumstances, Dieter remained calm despite all the excitement at the start and stuck to his plan. Stay calm at the beginning and, above all, maintain your own steady pace. However, things got a little tense at the end when he started to struggle. Thanks to his perseverance and determination, he was able to move up quite a few places in the second half of the marathon. From 22nd position (there were 28 marathon runners at the start), he steadily pushed through to a well-deserved and honourable 16th place.This allowed Dieter to improve the Belgian record by no less than 5 minutes for the second time this year!The stage:Gold : Otto Kingstedt (with a new Worldrecord of 2:16,10.Silver : David Kipkogei Kiptum from Kenya.Bronze : Jose Libardo from Colombia.Dieter confirmed his good form at these Deaflympics and surprised both our Belgian supporters with a significant improvement on his personal and Belgian record! From 1969, it was called the World Games for the DeafThe Games first took place in 1969 in an area under communist rule in Yugoslavia: Belgrade. 1. 189 athletes from 33 countries (Belgium, France, Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Greece, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, East Germany, West Germany, Turkey, Soviet Union, Israel, Japan, Iran, India, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Canada and the USA) participated in these Games with sports such as athletics, basketball, diving, gymnastics, handball, volleyball, swimming, football, cycling, shooting, table tennis and tennis.
