This European Championship was characterised by the Germans’ clear dominance; in the absence of Ukraine, a major medal contender, they swept up the majority of the medals. Belgium had high hopes of bringing home several medals, but ended up with just one bronze – in the men’s team event, in which seven nations competed – after finishing fourth in the qualifiers, a result that automatically secured them the bronze.
In the Men’s Trio event, the Belgians finished 6th out of 14 trios; furthermore, top favourite Christophe Bartholome ultimately came 8th out of 52 competitors in the All-Events, which – taking the other disciplines into account – fell well short of expectations.
The best results came from the women, with Lydia Bartholome securing 5th place in the All-Events, also finishing in the top 8 in the Masters, and taking 5th place in the Doubles out of 23 teams, alongside Amelie Cantreuil.
