The Danish Deaf Sports Association wanted to organise these Games as it would allow them to celebrate their 75th anniversary.
Two new sports appeared on the programme: bowling & orienteering!
For the Belgian delegation, this broadcast was a flop.... all members of the Belgian delegation had to stay in a school instead of a hotel....
2. 027 athletes from as many as 65 countries (Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Ireland, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Yugoslavia, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Algeria, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Israel, Iran, Kuwait, Pakistan, Russia, Ukraine, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Korea, China, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Venuzuela, Argentina, Brazil, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Cuba, Canada and the USA) participated in these Games with sports such as athletics, badminton, basketball, bowling, handball, orienteering, swimming, water polo, football, volleyball, cycling, shooting, table tennis, tennis and wrestling.
Notable facts were :
- a few days before these Games started, the local chairman of the organising committee, Mr Preben Hansen (hearing) died of a heart attack;
- a Czech athlete won two gold medals in the discus throw & shot put, but was caught doping. Consequently, her medals were immediately taken away from her and awarded to athletes from Poland & Finland;
In the medal standings, we saw : the USA finished in 1st place with 75 medals (28 gold, 21 silver and 26 bronze), while Germany took 2nd place with 45 medals (10 gold, 17 silver and 18 bronze) and Russia third with 42 medals (13 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze).
Belgium with 25 athletes (22 men & 3 women) won 8 medals: 1 gold, 4 silver & 3 bronze medals.
