12e Deaflympics in Malmö 1973

 Sweden took responsibility for the 2nd time in history to host the Silent Games in Malmö after organising the Silent Games in Stockholm for the 1st time in 1939. 

Belgium won a lot of medals for the first time with 21 athletes: 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.

1,116 athletes from 31 countries (Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Czech Republic, Romania, East Germany, West Germany, Soviet Union, Israel, Japan, Iran, India, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada and the USA) took part in these Games with sports such as athletics, basketball, swimming, football, cycling, shooting, table tennis and tennis. 
Ireland came to these Silent Games for the first time

Notable facts were:  
  •  there were 2 top swimmers at these Pacific Games who excelled: 
    - Ronald Rice (USA): 5 gold medals (100m freestyle, 1,500m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m medley.  
    - Lynn Ballard (USA): 4 gold medals (100m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley. 
  • In addition, also following top athletes in:
    - Athletics: Leo Bond (USA) with 4 gold medals (400 m, 800 m, 4x100 m medley and 4x400 m medley).
    - Table tennis: Masayuki Ikushima (JAP): 3 gold medals (single, double & Team)
    - Shooting: Antonio Endruzzi: 2 gold medals.
  • In the medal standings, we saw : the USA finished in 1st place with 78 medals (29 gold, 19 silver and 29 bronze), while the Soviet Union won 48 medals (2nd place with 26 gold, 15 silver and 7 bronze) and Italy took 3rd place with 20 medals (10 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze).

      • Willy Van Mulders (°1953) : 800 m (silver) and 1.500 m (silver).
      • Dominique Burtin (°1954) : 100 m, javelin (7th place) and pentathlon (4th place). 
      • Freddy Daems (°1954) : 100m, 200 m and Long Jump.
      • Xavier Van de Velde (°1945) : 5.000 m and 10.000 m.
      • Jozef Vandendriessche (°1950) : 100 m and 200 m. 

    • Tennis 
      • Jean-Claude Biernaux (°1953) :  singles (bronze), doubles (with Lucien Gerin) and doubles mixed (silver, with Josette Robinson).
      • Lucien Gerin (°1945) :  singles and doubles (with Jean-Claude Biernaux)
      • Jean-Claude Billen (°1941) :  singles.
      • Josette Robinson (°1941) :  singles and doubles mixed (silver, with Jean-Claude Biernaux).
      • Charles Van Laer (°1934) : singles.

    • Natation
      • Joris Vandevelde (°1955) : 100 m Freestyle and 200 m breaststroke(5th place).

    • Cyclisme
      • Bernard Deschamps (°1944) :  individual time trial (6the place), individual road race (bronze) and 1.000 m Sprint (5th place).
      • Lucien Uzeel (°1946) :   individual time trial,  individual road race  (5th place) and 1.000 m Sprint (gold)

    • Table Tennis
      • Claude Steenwerckx (°1945) : singles & doubles (with Samuel Medan).
      • Samuel Medan (°1948) :  singles & doubles  ( with Claude Steenwerckx).
      • Jean-Claude Callebaut (°1947) :  singles & doubles  ( with Bernard Fleurus).
      • Bernard Fleurus (°1948) :  singles & doubles  ( with Jean-Claude Callebaut).
      • Marie-José Endron (°1947) :  singles & doubles  ( with Rywka Herszteyn).
