For the first time since 2014, the European Deaf Sports Organization (EDSO) successfully organized a seminar dedicated to Deaf women in sports. This year’s event, themed “Women’s Leadership in Sports,” took place on 2-3 May 2025 in the beautiful coastal town of Şile, near Istanbul, Türkiye.
The seminar brought together 45 participants from 19 countries, creating a rich space for exchange, learning, and networking. Belgium was represented by Liisa Halonen (DSV) and Manon Maillieu (LSFS).
The topics were, among other things: The role of (Deaf) women in sports history, obstacles and challenges faced by Deaf women in the sports world, representation of and opportunities for Deaf girls from diverse backgrounds in sports. The seminar was not only about serious debates. Participants also enjoyed the charm of Şile, a serene harbor city, and took part in fun games and evening activities that fostered friendship and community spirit.
Although 2 days felt too short to cover everything in depth, the experience was highly inspirational. Both Belgian participants expressed a renewed motivation to bring these discussions and ideas forward in Belgium, ensuring that the momentum continues at a national level. This seminar marks an important step in empowering Deaf women in sports leadership across Europe.
